CALSTART

Paving the way for an emission-free future.

Calstart is a national clean transportation nonprofit consortium. The program has assembled industry leaders like Ford and General Motors to inspire innovation and stimulate growth in the zero-emission marketplace. With so many irons in the fire, Calstart and its many offshoots require new graphics on a regular basis. Every now and then, I am called up to fill in the gaps.

California HVIP

California's Clean Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP) is one of the many programs administered by Calstart. The project aims to reduce  pollution on California roadways by helping the commercial transportation sector transition to zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). Essentially, HVIP covers a portion of the cost to purchase new ZEV fleets for interested freight and passenger carriers. I was tasked with presenting the efficacy of this fledgling program in 80 words or less.

Ride and Drive San Diego

Ride and Drive events are opportunities for truckers, business owners, and other interested parties to take a look at the latest commercial ZEVs and hybrids hitting the market. They usually include prototype battery charging stations with auxiliary amenities—things like slushy dispensers. That being said, the biggest draw for these events are the ride-along tours, whereby visitors can sit shotgun in a semi-truck as they complete a circuit around the venue. I illustrated the map for one such Ride and Drive event that took place at the North Island Credit Union Ampitheatre.

Graphics and Icons

Calstart has requested a variety of icons, bar charts, and other data visualizations since I began working with their internal marketing team. This has allowed me to better understand how raw numbers can translate into a visual medium. It has also taught me how to develop graphics within a strict brand style guide.
